“Fast Forever” director Louis Leterrier says he hasn’t read the script that made Vin Diesel cry

Louis Leterrier hasn’t read the Fast Forever script that Vin Diesel calls the best he’s seen in decades.

The filmmaker is under contract to direct the final Fast & Furious film.

Leterrier admits that the franchise has to “align our budgetary needs to the reality of the box office.”

Louis Leterrier just released Netflix’s The Last House, and now it’s time for someone to update him on the last Fast & Furious.

After stepping in to replace Justin Lin as Fast X director during production, it was announced that Leterrier would return to close the door on Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and helm the final installment, Fast Forever. The past few years have been filled with a lot of Fast silence, but the engine seemed to recently be finally revving up, as Diesel just revealed that the current draft of the Fast 11 script brought him to tears. And yet, Leterrier told Polygon that he hasn’t read that tear-inducing work from writer Mike Lesslie.

“I’d love to tell you the full truth, but I can’t,” he said with a laugh. “There will be an ending, and it’s great. I was very, very lucky to be part of the franchise, and I love Vin and I love Universal. They’re great to work with. So yeah, we’ll see, hopefully.”

It’s fair to wonder about his status on the project with Leterrier adding, “They have to finish it. Someone has to end it.”

In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Leterrier confirmed that he’s “contracted” for Fast Forever, and alluded to the delays being tied to having to “align our budgetary needs to the reality of the box office.”

“It’ll be fine,” he said. “I worked very hard in coming up with the idea for the end ... So I cannot wait. I love this franchise, and I hope we get to finish in the best way possible.”

It’s been a longer than usual road to the big screen for Fast Forever, which is set to be the last of the main series. Planned as the first of a two-part finale, Fast X arrived in 2023, but, due to disappointing box office returns and a lack of fan enthusiasm, it took three years for Fast Forever to finally land the release date of March 17, 2028. (Leterrier told Polygon that “we were supposed to go straight into Fast 11” after Fast X.) The five-year stretch between films will be the longest gap in Fast history.

“I know a lot, we have conversations all the time,” Fast X star Alan Ritchson recently said of Fast 11. “There’s just a lot of obstacles. It’s expensive to make— it’s too expensive; it doesn’t make a ton of sense. There’s a more efficient way to shoot those shows. And so there has to be a way to show restraint, while also honoring the fact that this world has expanded to something humongous. We are at the crossroads of something very hard to figure out, and everybody’s figuring it out.”

With Fast 11 initially expected to come shortly after Fast X, the 10th installment concluded on a number of shocking cliffhangers, between the lives of many characters being in jeopardy and the returns of Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson.

“It’s been 20 years, almost a quarter of a century with these characters, this family,” Leterrier teased of Fast’s end in 2023 on EW’s BINGE: The Fast Saga podcast. “They have done so much for so many people, and also have fought so many enemies that now people are coming back after them. They are going to have to pay the heaviest price, you know, just the heftiest price. Tears are going to be shed.”
