Jennifer Hudson’s son is another year older!
The actress and talk show host, 44, celebrated her son David’s 17th birthday with a few posts on Instagram. In the first post, Hudson shared a recent snap of her and the teen, who stood taller than his mother, dressed in a black T-shirt and gray sweatpants. In the caption, she asked her followers to help her make his day special by joining her in wishing him a happy birthday.
“Team Jhud can yal help me wish doj a happy 17th birthday today !” she captioned the post.
Shortly after her initial post, the doting mom shared a throwback photo of her son. In the caption, Hudson, who welcomed her son in 2009 with her ex-fiancé David Otunga, expressed her disbelief at how fast her son grew up.
“Can you believe this kid is 17 already??? Happy 17th birthday @d.o.j10 !!!” she wrote.
Back in February, the singer spoke with PEOPLE at the 30th ABFF Honors at the SLS Hotel in Los Angeles, Calif., and opened up about her tour this summer. Hudson said she’s been finding inspiration in her son and boyfriend Common.
“My voice is a tree of many branches. I am a music lover, as well as a singer [and] artist, so it’s going to display all of that, right? So yes, you may hear new material,” Hudson told PEOPLE. “My son is also a producer, and he’s been recreating some of my songs, so I’m inspired by that.”
“And then of course, the man Common, being around them both, they are so musical. It’s inspired me in so many unique ways,” she continued. “So that’s bringing out my artistry.”

That isn’t the first time Hudson has spoken about her son David’s musical abilities. Back in November, Hudson shared that the teen is following in his mother’s footsteps when she posted a selection of clips from their shared time in the recording studio.
In the post’s caption, Hudson reflected on the wholesome motherhood moment. “The best part of singing is singing with my son,” she wrote. “He said mama let’s record one of my fav songs together. 💜.”
The first clip saw Hudson lightly coach David through a vocal riff, and then he was off: as her son sang into the mic, Hudson smiled as she admired her son in his element. In the next slide, David listened to the track back, bopping his head and smiling, pleased with the recording.
Hudson included a snap of her son alone inside the recording booth, with her own reflection appearing on the glass in the photo. The endeavor wasn’t all serious, though: Hudson also included a short clip of the duo messing around between takes, with David swatting at his mother’s arms as she ruffled his hair.
In a final snippet, Hudson shared a clip of her part of the duet. After missing a note, both she and David broke into laughter. Hudson tried to continue, but her son’s playful mockery only fed their fit of giggles, and they had to take a pause.
“He said now mama u can’t be doing all of that! Lol all in fun 😂,” she wrote.
