Simmons also opens up about her kids' recent milestones

Kimora Lee Simmons is lifting the curtain on her and her family's glamorously chaotic reality.

On top of managing her iconic brand Baby Phat and starring in her new reality show Kimora: Back in the Fab Lane, the model, 50, is also a busy single mom to her five kids Ming Lee, 25, Aoki Lee, 23, Kenzo Lee, 16, Gary Lee, 16, and Wolfe Lee, 10, plus “bonus son” Jayden, 19, who has lived with the family since he was in fourth grade.

"I don't sleep much," Simmons tells PEOPLE. "I know that's bad. I'm always taking all the kids' orders, taking them to date nights, arranging cars. My oldest child is 25, and you can look at Miss Ming Lee's Instagram and then just know that I'm the mom on the other end in the middle of the night making sure everything's okay. Part of my exhaustion is managing the kids."

With her kids at all different ages and stages of life, she says she has "to wear a lot of different hats."

"It's not like one hat goes away or anything like that," she says. "It's like all different versions at different times, and you have to juggle. It's a balancing act."

Simmons adds that she doesn't "have a relationship really" with her kids' fathers. She shares Ming and Aoki with her ex-husband, record executive Russell Simmons; Kenzo with actor Djimon Hounsou; and Wolfe with former investment banker Tim Leissner, who was sentenced to two years in prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to bribery and money laundering charges.

"Usually I would say that I co-parent okay, but the kids are with me full-time," says Simmons, who adopted Gary from Jamaica in 2020. "I'm pretty much the primary parent. It's difficult, but I don't know sometimes what other people are thinking. Guys are weird."

Simmons is currently helping Ming and Aoki — who graduated from New York University and Harvard, respectively — navigate careers of their own in the modeling and business worlds.

"They obviously grew up with their mom in front of the camera, but it's a little different when you're branching out on your own," she says. "They've done monumental things in their careers, and I'm so proud of them. Ming has her skincare brand Boulangerie Beauty, and it's really yummy smelling. Some of the smells remind me of Baby Phat."

She's also been there for them as they've experienced bullying both at university and in fashion.

"It's been for looking different," she says. "They definitely had their moments, and we're very close, thankfully. My girls talk to me about almost anything. They know they can. And if they don't want to talk to me, they have other sound, safe resources to get help, which is also very important."

Jayden, meanwhile, graduated high school, and Kenzo and Gary are busy with high school sports.

"Kenzo is 6'9" and plays varsity basketball, Gary plays football," Simmons says. "I'm close to the teams and catering dinners for all the student groups. I'm an involved parent."

Fans can get a glimpse of Simmons and her family's daily life in Kimora: Back in the Fab Lane, a follow-up to her first show Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane, which ran from 2007-2011.

“It’s like a chapter two of life,” Simmons says. “I do think things go in a cycle — it’s not just cliché. I’m living it.”
