The moving memorial scene depicted in last night’s episode of *Marshals* also served as a real-life ceremony for late *1923* star, Cole Brings Plenty.

The latest installment of the *Yellowstone* spinoff saw Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) return to Broken Rock reservation to honor his late wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), on the one-year anniversary of her death. He attended the memorial alongside their son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), and Monica’s grandfather, Felix (Rudy Ramos).

Series star Arielle Kebbel told PEOPLE that the scene carried even more meaning for everyone involved because it also functioned as a tribute to Cole, who died at 27 in April 2024. Cole has family ties to *Marshals*, with his uncle Mo Brings Plenty reprising his *Yellowstone* role in the Taylor Sheridan-penned follow-up.

"We filmed the ceremony, and Mo Brings Plenty brought his family to it, and it was a way of honoring his nephew," Kebbel told the outlet. "I will remember that day for as long as I live. It was very emotional… And it was a real reminder that the lines between art and life are very blurred and very powerful."

Cole was found dead in April 2024, days after he was reported missing and identified as a suspect in an alleged domestic violence case. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office later announced that they had found "no indication of foul play” in his death.

Kebbel also got the chance to meet and speak with the Brings Plenty family offscreen. "They're sending me handmade jewelry that I'm going to wear in their honor," she said. "I mean, it brings me to tears to be part of this community and also to learn more about what happened to Cole and bring that awareness."

She described the experience of shooting the double memorial as one that "you can never plan for going into it, but has deeply impacted me forever."

Speaking with *The Hollywood Reporter** *last month, Mo called the loss of Cole “heartbreaking” and urged for an investigation to be launched into his nephew's death. "For his murder to go uninvestigated, and for it to be written off as 'no foul play,' because they didn’t want to invest anything into it? It’s heartbreaking," Mo alleged. "Because we’re taxpaying people as well. So for them to not work for us, no different than how they work for anyone else is pretty sad.”

In the wake of Mo's claims, the Lawrence Police Department and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office issued separate statements about the case to PEOPLE.

"The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough investigation in the death of Cole Brings Plenty and revealed these findings to the family,” a spokesperson told the outlet. “JCSO is unable to provide details of the investigation due to the court order obtained by the family sealing the records from public release.”

A Lawrence Police Department spokesperson told PEOPLE that they extended their condolences to the Brings Plenty family and similarly offered to “release a full report of our investigative efforts and results” with their approval.

The spokesperson claimed that the department had “provided a complete, in-person presentation of the evidence to the family, which included videos, witness statements, and photographs,” but that “the family chose not to release the facts” to the public.

Furthermore, they stated that the Brings Plenty family “petitioned the court to seal the autopsy report, medical examiner’s case file, law enforcement case files of the Lawrence, Kansas Police Department and the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Department, and the Death Certificate of Cole Brings Plenty."

The spokesperson continued, “The entire case contains clear evidence that there was no foul play involved in Cole’s death and that Cole acted alone. Any confusion and speculation are a result of the family’s messaging.”

In addition to the *Marshals* scene, Cole also received an onscreen tribute in the season 2 premiere of *1923* last year. A series of videos and photographs of the actor as his character, Pete Plenty Clouds, was displayed during the credits with the accompanying message: “In memoriam Cole Brings Plenty.”
