Jack Huston is explaining his Spider-Noir take on Sandman

The actor, who plays classic Spider-Man character Flint Marko in the series, says he didn't need to "relate it to anything that's come before, or that might come after"

Huston added that he "loved" Thomas Haden Church's performance as the villain in 2007's Spider-Man 3

Jack Huston is putting his own stamp on one of Spider-Man’s most recognizable villains.

The Spider-Noirstar, 43, caught up with PEOPLE about his new take on the classic Spider-Man villain — and what went into crafting his own version of Flint Marko.

As Huston puts it, he "didn't really know what it was entirely" at first when he was tapped for the role of the misunderstood bad guy. But the "brilliance" of co-showrunner Oren Uziel's writing meant he didn't have to "relate it to anything that's come before, or that might come after."

"It's such a different iteration of the Sandman, the Flint Marko in this one. I think we all were encouraged to bring our own take and our own version of what we saw the character as, and put our stamp on it because we didn't feel like we were stepping on any toes," Huston said of his character.

He adds, "And I think that's such a nice freedom to be given in what is quite a well-trodden universe with the Spider-Verse. That's how I felt about this one. It was amazing. It was amazing to be given that opportunity."

As for the previous actors behind the character, including Thomas Haden Church in 2007's Spider-Man 3, Huston considers himself a fan. "I love that performance," he says. "I love that film."

And much like Spider-Man 3, Flint Marko isn't the only menacing face in town. Spider-Noir, which takes place in 1930s New York City, also features Andrew Lewis Caldwell's Dirk Leydon (Megawatt), Brendan Gleeson's Silvermane and Abraham Popoola's Lonnie Lincoln (Tombstone), marking a first live-action appearance for the latter villain.

Although Tombstone is set to appear in Marvel’s future blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Popoola tells PEOPLE that he feels “lucky” to be the first actor to bring the villain to life in live action through Spider-Noir.

"Just unbridled joy and excitement," Popoola says of his reaction to his casting. "I didn't really think about being the first. When I realized it was like, 'Oh, that's incredibly exciting.' But I think Tombstone is such a cool character and there's going to be more, as we know, and I'm excited to see those versions."

Popoola also says he's excited about Spider-Noir's ability to bring in "people who aren't interested in superhero franchises," thanks to the noir aspect of it all.

"They can just get in and just see something fresh and get to see incredible performances from prestige actors, material which is just so fun and full," he says. "I think that's going to be really exciting for everybody."

Spider-Noir also stars Nicolas Cage (Ben Reilly/The Spider), Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez and Lamorne Morris. All eight episodes of Spider-Noir, which debuted domestically on MGM+’s linear broadcast channel, are now available to stream on Prime Video.
