Who is Jacob Frey? What to know about Minneapolis mayor amid DHS shooting

A U.S. immigration agent shot and killed a 37-year-old woman in her car in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Jan. 7, during an immigration enforcement surge, according to local and federal officials, the latest violent incident during President Donald Trump's nationwide crackdown on immigrants.

"They're already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said at a press conference. "Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly - that is bull----."

A visibly angry Frey said federal immigration agents were responsible for sowing chaos in the city, telling them: "Get the f--- out of Minneapolis."

Frey, 44, is a Democrat currently serving his third term as the Mayor of Minneapolis, having been re-elected in 2025.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary and attended Villanova University School of Law, where he graduated cum laude. In 2013, Frey ran for the Minneapolis City Council, winning a seat.

After representing Ward 3 for three years, Frey ran for the mayor’s office. After winning his election, Frey became the second-ever Jewish mayor and the second-youngest mayor in the history of Minneapolis.
