"House of the Dragon" is in the endgame now.
The shocking events of the "Game of Thrones" prequel's Season 3 finale, in which Ormund Hightower (James Norton) met a violent end during a fiery battle at Tumbleton, and Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban) threw herself to her death, have set the stage for an explosive last stretch of episodes.
But while the original "Thrones" would, for most of its run, consistently return to HBO every year, that hasn't been the case with "House of the Dragon," which has had lengthier breaks between seasons. So just how long of a hiatus are fans in for before Season 4 debuts? Here's what we know.
Has 'House of the Dragon' been renewed for a fourth season?
Thankfully, there's no risk of "House of the Dragon" ending abruptly without a resolution: HBO already renewed the show for Season 4 back in November, long before Season 3 aired.
How many more seasons of 'House of the Dragon' will there be?
Season 4 will be the final season of "House of the Dragon."
The show's creatives have been talking about having four seasons in mind since the very beginning, with executive producer George R.R. Martin noting in 2022 that it would take "four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish."
That plan later became more official, and in January, HBO formally confirmed that Season 4 is, indeed, the show's last.
That will make "House of the Dragon" about half as long as the original "Thrones," which is in keeping with the source material. Whereas "Thrones" had five, meaty novels to adapt, "House of the Dragon" is based on just one specific section of a single book, "Fire & Blood."
When will 'House of the Dragon' return for Season 4?
"House of the Dragon" Season 4 is expected to air in 2028.
An exact premiere date hasn't been confirmed, though Season 2 and Season 3 both began in June after a nearly two-year hiatus, and Season 4 looks to be on track to follow that timeline again.

In June, showrunner Ryan Condal said in a press conference that "we're as far ahead as we've ever been at this point in crafting a new season," noting that "we're actively writing" Season 4 and "starting to turn drafts over to HBO," according to Gold Derby.
While appearing on the "Scriptnotes" podcast in July, Condal also said that "Season 4, we have essentially written already," though he noted that "we won't start production until early next year, early 2027, because the schedule is such a Jenga tower."
Filming on Season 3 began in March 2025, and it ultimately premiered in June 2026. So if cameras are rolling on Season 4 by early 2027, the show will be in good shape for a June 2028 return.
What will the plot of 'House of the Dragon' Season 4 be?
Without getting into spoilers, Season 4 will take viewers through the end of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Unlike "Game of Thrones," which famously ran out of books to adapt for its final seasons, "House of the Dragon" has a published ending to work with: Martin's 2018 novel "Fire & Blood," which reads as a history book about the Targaryen dynasty, tells the complete story of the conflict.
In fact, the book goes on for a bit longer after this conflict is over, continuing to trace the Targaryen lineage. But the show is expected to end earlier than the book, given it is more tightly focused on this particular war and a specific set of characters.
If the book is any indication, Season 4 will be jam-packed with shocking turns, major deaths and massive set pieces: Several of the most iconic moments from the source material, which readers have been waiting to see come to life since the show was announced, are contained within Season 4.
Speaking with Deadline, Condal teased that that the ambition for Season 4 is "massive," adding that it will "be the biggest season we have made, for sure."

What's next for 'Game of Thrones' after 'House of the Dragon' ends?
The end of "House of the Dragon" won't mark the end of the "Thrones" franchise.
Before Season 4 airs, the prequel "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," a more small-scale, light-hearted romp following the adventures of hedge knight Dunk (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), will return for Season 2 in 2027. Showrunner Ira Parker has teased his hopes that the show could have a lengthy run, so it may still be going after "House of the Dragon" is over.
A "Game of Thrones" movie is also in the works. Plot details haven't been confirmed, but reports have suggested it will center on Aegon I Targaryen's conquest of Westeros, meaning it would essentially function like a prequel to "House of the Dragon," set about 100 years before the events of the first season. The movie, which is being written by Beau Willimon, doesn't have a confirmed release date.
